The hope of those who endure
Amal lives right beside the barrier, in a house that seems on the verge of being swallowed by concrete. In the alleys of the Tulkarm refugee camp, hope and the longing to freely decide who to become are a rare currency—one he guards as if it were contraband. But every single day, he must reckon with a world forcing him to choose between his own dream and loyalty to the Palestinian cause.

When anger becomes identity
Hassan, on the other hand, no longer dreams. He grew up amidst night raids and checkpoints, learning early on that anger is more reliable than promises. For him, life is a tally of wrongs waiting to be set right. Every injury is an open credit, every painful memory a debt demanding to be settled.
Eitan
An unwavering belief in their mission
Eitan is a settler. He grew up in the West Bank settlement of Itamar, convinced that the land beneath his feet was not merely a right, but a duty to be defended. His identity was forged in the absolute certainty that danger always comes from the other side of the wall.
Gal
When the need for protection becomes a prison
Gal lives in Tel Aviv, far from the dust of the settlements and the chaos of checkpoints and occupation. Her life is built on coffee in Jaffa, neon lights, and the open sea. Yet the echo of that distant conflict creeps into her days: in childhood memories, inherited fears, and choices she never truly made. For her, the State of Israel represents both protection and imprisonment—two sides of the very same sentence.

Nino Orto
An independent journalist specialising in geopolitics and Middle Eastern conflicts, with a particular focus on Iraq, Syria, and regional warfare. For over a decade, he has provided on-the-ground reporting and analysis from some of the world’s most complex crisis zones, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the war in Ukraine, global migration to Europe, international jihadism, and Sunni-Shia interreligious tensions.
In 2014, he founded Osservatorio Mashrek, a research platform dedicated to the political and social transformations of the Middle East. He is the author of Business, Piombo, Dollari: La privatizzazione della guerra irachena, an in-depth analysis of the role of private military companies in the Iraq conflict.
